Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her grandmother and mother. When she was a little girl, she struggled with obsessive-compulsive disorder and suffered from anxiety because of the word association. Ford's love for acting grew as a child. She was a part of at the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just one month, she decided that it wasn't suitable for her. Ford decided to apply instead at the Central School of Speech and Drama and finally won an interview on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's fellow students. The actor would go on to have recurring roles as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford didn't complete her degree until 1993. However, in 1991, Ford had made her first appearance on TV on the show Surgical Spirit. At that moment, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate appeared in TV programmes including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning in the Nineties. Tate was also a regular performer in the theatre, and later joined the Royal Shakespeare Company during its season between 2000 and 2001. Tate became famous for her stand-up comedies that were added to Tate's selection in the year 1996.
